500,000 meals delivered with Coronation Food Project
Samworth Brothers has helped provide over 500,000 meals for people in food poverty in the past year in partnership with the Coronation Food Project.
Inspired by His Majesty The King and supported by many leading food companies, the Coronation Food Project addresses food insecurity with a dual mission: reducing waste and providing meals for millions of families in need across the UK.
Samworth Brothers Group Chief Executive Simon Wookey, and other Samworth Brothers colleagues recently joined the Project’s first anniversary celebrations attended by King Charles III.
“Over the past year, Samworth Brothers, in collaboration with Tesco, has contributed over 500,000 meals through the Coronation Food Project”, said Simon. “I am incredibly proud of all our colleagues involved, who have gone above and beyond to make this happen. As a business we remain committed to reducing food waste within our own operations and redistributing surplus food as part of our ongoing efforts.”
The Project intends to provide even more food to support the 13 million people in the UK experiencing food insecurity by targeting all forms of waste in the food supply chain and building on the food industry’s existing initiatives to redistribute surplus food to charities.
In the Project’s first year, 940 tonnes of additional surplus food has been rescued, with 1,900 tonnes more donated; £715,000 has been circulated in community food grants; and £15m has been raised to officially open the first two Coronation Food Hubs in Merseyside and South London.
Senior leaders from the UK food industry also signed a historic pledge supporting the Project. Since then, the industry has mobilised around a pioneering initiative to create a sustainable, systemic approach to surplus food redistribution across the UK food sector, generating millions more meals for people in need.
